The first growing biosphere on the Moon is the Chang’e 4 (China), which contains a Lunar Micro Ecosystem, housing cotton seeds and insects eggs, achieved by China National Space Administration, on 3 January 2019.
The mission became the first biosphere to touch down on the surface of the far side of the Moon. Activated on landing, the self-contained biosphere was designed to raise seeds and hatch fruit fly eggs in an attempt to create a tiny ecosystem and assess how it reacted to the high-radiation, low-gravity environment.
