On 13 June 2010, the Japanese space probe Hayabusa returned to Earth after a sampling mission to the Itokawa asteroid 300 million km from Earth. The probe landed successfully on the 250-m-wide (820-ft) asteroid on 25 November 2005 and collected dust samples for analysis back on Earth. The results were published in Science in August 2011.
This is also the first time material has been returned to Earth from an asteroid One astronomical unit (AU) is approximately 149,597,780 km (92,955,887.6 miles), and is the mean distance between the Sun and the Earth.
