The ant species that averages the largest for the mean size of the entire colony (i.e., the mean size obtained from the measurements of all workers, soldiers, drones and queen) is Dinoponera gigantea. Native to unflooded portions of Amazon rainforest in Brazil and Peru as well as in coastal Guyana, South America, it averages up to 3.3 cm long.
In comparison to this measurement, the world's largest ants in terms of absolute measurement are the workers (females) of Dorylus helvolus, which can attain a total length of up to 5 cm.
