Across five series between 21 July and 20 August 2016, there were 31 consecutive days of Test cricket played worldwide. The featured series were West Indies vs. India (four matches), England vs. Pakistan (three), Sri Lanka vs. Australia (three), Zimbabwe vs. New Zealand (two) and South Africa vs. New Zealand (one). The run came to a soggy end when the last three days (21–23 August) of South Africa's home Test against New Zealand at Kingsmead, Durban, were abandoned without a ball bowled.
The 13 matches that took place in the 31-day period were: West Indies vs. India (21–24 July 2016); England vs. Pakistan (22–25 July); Sri Lanka vs. Australia (26–30 July); Zimbabwe vs. New Zealand (28–31 July); West Indies vs. India (30 July–3 August); England vs. Pakistan (3–7 August); Sri Lanka vs. Australia (4–6 August); Zimbabwe vs. New Zealand (6–10 August); West Indies vs. India (9–10 and 12–13 August; no play on 11 August); England vs. Pakistan (11–14 August); Sri Lanka vs. Australia (13–17 August); West Indies vs. India (18 Aug; no play on 19–22 August); South Africa vs. New Zealand (19–20 August; no play on 21–23 August).
This unusual record was first touted by Benedict Bermange, statistician for Sky Sports, on Twitter on 24 July 2016: "If the current Test matches all go the distance, today is day four of a potential record 34 consecutive days of Test cricket worldwide." As it turned out, with the last three days of South Africa vs. New Zealand abandoned, the potential 34 consecutive days was reduced to 31.
In total, six different series were played during the summer of 2016, with England's three-match series against Sri Lanka (19 May–13 June) the only one not to feature in the record-breaking 31-day streak.
