On 9 June 2017, leg spinner Rashid Khan (Afghanistan, b. 20 September 1998) recorded the best ODI (One-Day International) figures by a player from an associate (non-Test-playing) nation, taking seven wickets for 18 runs in 8.4 overs against the West Indies at Gros Islet, Saint Lucia. Only three bowlers have returned better figures in ODI history. On 17 March 2017, aged 18 years 178 days, Khan claimed six Irish wickets at Greater Noida Sports Complex Ground in Uttar Pradesh, India, to become the second youngest player to take five wickets in an ODI match.
Previous record: Josh Davey, 6 wickets for 28 runs for Scotland against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi, UAE, on 14 January 2015.
The three bowlers from Test-playing nations with better ODI figures than Khan: Chaminda Vaas (Sri Lanka; 8 wickets for 19 runs vs. Zimbabwe on 8 December 2001); Shahid Afridi (Pakistan; 7 wickets for 12 runs vs. West Indies on 14 July 2013); Glen McGrath (Australia; 7 wickets for 15 runs vs. Namibia on 27 February 2003).
Waqar Younis (Pakistan, b. 16 November 1971), at 18 years 164 days, was just 14 days younger than Khan when he took six wickets for 26 runs against Sri Lanka in Sharjah, UAE, on 29 April 1990.
The match against the West Indies was Khan's 27th ODI appearance for Afghanistan. His ODI debut came on 18 October 2015, aged 17 years 28 days.
