Largest galaxy

The central galaxy of the Abell 2029 galaxy cluster, 1,070 million light years distant in Virgo, has a major diameter of 5,600,000 light years – around 50 times the diameter of our own Milky Way galaxy – and a light output equivalent to two trillion (2x1,012) Suns. The galaxy, known as IC 1101, is of the elliptical type and is believed to be the result of the merger of many smaller galaxies.
