The most Olympic gold medals in an individual fencing discipline (male) is three, achieved by Áron Szilágyi (Hungary) in the sabre in 2012, 2016 and 2021.
On 24 July 2021, Szilágyi defeated Luigi Samele 15–7 in the final of the men’s sabre at the Tokyo 2020 Games to become the first man to win gold in the same Olympic individual fencing discipline. Szilágyi also won the sabre in 2012 and 2016. He became only the third man to win three individual fencing Olympic titles, after Ramón Fonst (epee in 1900 and 1904, foil in 1904) and Nedo Nadi (foil in 1912 and 1920, sabre in 1920).
