The series was created by Hideo Kojima, who was the lead developer on the vast majority of Metal Gear games. He wrote, directed, and was lead designer of, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (Konami Digital Entertainment, 2015), which was his last work at publishers Konami. After he left, he formed the independent studio Kojima Productions and developed Death Stranding (2019).
