On 16 August 2009, Usain Bolt (Jamaica) won the 100 m final of the World Athletics Championships in Berlin, Germany, in a time of 9.58 seconds. He broke his previous record of 9.69 seconds, set at the Beijing Olympics exactly one year previously, by 11 hundredths of a second. It was the third time that Bolt had set a new fastest time for the 100 m.

Bolt shattered his own record of 9.69 seconds exactly one year to the day when he won the Olympic gold medal. This run helped him win the gold medal at the World Championships.

Tyson Gay (USA) ran the third fastest time ever (9.71 seconds) to finish second.
