The most people playing a card game simultaneously is 2992 and was achieved by Huai'an Guandan Culture Association (China), in Huai'an, Jiangsu, China, on 16 October 2016.

Card games similar to Guandan were first played in China in the 1940s but today's version was only formally given a name, set of rules and official status in 2006. The name Guandan literally means "Smash an egg". The game is similar to many card games played overseas, with a few minor differences. It must be played with four players, playing in two pairs. It uses two packs of standard playing cards, with jokers also used. It is relatively easy to learn but takes years of practice to play to a proficient level.

The game originated in Huai'an, Jiangsu Province, the location for this record attempt. It is firmly entrenched in local culture. Participants in this attempt were members of the local Guandan Culture Association and other local players. The local saying in Jiangsu goes "Dinner isn't dinner without a Guandan winner".

A full game of Guandan involves up to 14 levels of play. A time limit can be set and the winners are the player and his partner who have reached the highest level of play when time has expired. At this attempt some participants reached the last level before the attempt officially finished. This attempt officially began at 10.18 am and finished at 11.11 am.

The attempt took place at the Journey to the West Visitors Centre, a theme park still under construction outside the city of Huai'an. Journey to the West is one of the four Chinese classics and its author hails from Huai'an, as does former PRC premier Zhou Enlai and the renowned Han Dynasty General Han Xin.
